Tripoli Gallery is pleased to present Afterlife, its debut solo exhibition of works by Angelbert Metoyer, on view from September 23 through October 23. The work of Metoyer is multilayered and multifaceted. He synthesizes elements derived from quantum physics, astronomy, psychoanalysis, ancient mythologies, the vastness of human history, and beyond. Fused with his own memory and interpretation, he weaves and connects geometric diagrams with conjured forms to create a surface that at once brings the viewer into both cosmic realms while facing and confronting the earthly human experience.

Employing materials ranging from coal to glass, oil to mirrors and gold dust, Metoyer explores themes of waste and destruction, of life and death. Cultural complexities are met with existential issues; examining the philosophical questions about multi-dimensionality, teleportation and M theory. “For me drawing is an order of various actions that create visions—a way of recalling archetypal memories, which then become the catalyst for the creation of the new forms that my hands conjure before me. The image is what is left over from an ‘encounter’ with the activity of drawing or painting. I only experience the process. The product itself is simply a memory: a door to the experience,” explains Metoyer. Afterlife is an invitation to view and participate in this process.
