Mark Perry, who divides his time between New York City and East Hampton, studied portraiture and life drawing at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He began exhibiting in Providence and later moved to New York City to continue his studies at the Society of Illustrators and the Spring Street Studio. Perry began to visit Amagansett regularly, and at the same time moved from figurative work to what became his passion: the landscape. The artist describes his process as fluid and says that “the challenge when making abstract work is keeping an open mind when imagery and thoughts constantly swirl through the brain.” Perry says that one of his current themes is the perception of time and what it means to an artist in middle age. “Is it possible to see and to paint with a heightened sense of discovery? Does experience give depth or limit my ability to engage fully, and without judgment?” Perry is a member of the Artists Alliance of East Hampton and for years was part of the AAEH annual studio tour. His paintings have been in solo and group shows and art fairs in NYC, Houston and East Hampton, and featured in sets for a major motion picture. Judy McDermott and Liz Plate are chairs for this show, which will be on exhibit from July 17 to August 6.
