Artists Reception- Laura Kessler

Please join us at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center to welcome Laura Kessler at an artists reception Friday, July 25th from 3-5pm. Take a look at her artwork displayed in our Bar and lounge and hear her words behind her artwork.

“Murals can be perceived as an overbearing representation of the artists perspective, conversely they are an opportunity for the viewers self-interpretation of the piece, that is what makes art so beautifully subjective.”

While my accomplishments un the past, including graduating Summa Cum Laude from SCAD, and winning several awards, will always be building blocks to help keep my growing, my failures keep me grounded: as I look forward and continue and learn from each opportunity I am given; viewing every success or milestone as an artist as the peak of a mountain. Once that box is checked, I start from the bottom or a new one, always climbing to achieve greatness.

So, let me tell you a little about why this octopus is so important. Like him, I am a free spirit; constantly learning and morphing not only as an artist but as a being; always thinking outside the box, both literally and metaphorically by dreaming big. Art has transformed my life in so many ways, as it does for many creatives, we are all searching for something new and transcending. I struggles feeling like I was a round peg being put in a square hole; leaving many dark spaces, some of which pulled me in. Now in my sobriety I have opened a window to a new world of clarity, while my style, fearlessness, personality, creativity and drive hasn’t changed, now everything is in a different light.

Even after completion of this 50′ mural, spending so much time learning about the octopus, how it moves, and what moves it; I realize everyday what moves me. There are infinite opportunities and chances we are given if we are willing to do the work.

For me art is not work, it is the fabric that is stitched into my identity, I am unapologetically an artist.
