Celebrate Women’s History Month at LTV Studios

LTV Studios has announced they will celebrate Women’s History Month with various events that will be held throughout the month of March and into mid-April.
In the 1980s, as LTV was conceived, women like Oprah Winfrey, Connie Chung and Barbara Walters were beginning their ascent into leadership positions in the mainstream media. Here in East Hampton, a look into LTV’s own history reveals that women in our community were also building prominent roles in media. Key players included Jill Keefe, one of LTV’s founders; Frances Ann Cannon Dougherty, who helped raise money for LTV’s facilities early on; Diana Weir, a longtime LTV board member who helped guide its direction; Morgan Vaughan, an executive director credited with stabilizing the organization; and an amazingly diverse range of women producers sharing their stories and exploring East Hampton over the years, among them Holocaust survivor Judy Sleed, political activist Phyllis Italiano, advocate Ambassador Sujay, archivist Genie Henderson and art gallerist Elaine Benson. LTV would simply not be what it is without the contributions of women over the last four decades.
“To study LTV’s history is to also study East Hampton women’s history. This organization truly created, and continues to create, space and opportunities for women in media and the performing arts. Personally, even though I’m a relative newcomer here, I feel inspired by its culture of inclusivity and support. I’m really excited for the forthcoming slate of programming we have lined up throughout March, and I hope that everyone in our community — not just the women and girls — will show up to learn, appreciate, and celebrate.” – Chrissy Sampson, Director of Community Engagement.
LTV’s Creative Director Josh Gladstone adds, “We’re proud to showcase the broadcast contributions of women producers on our Channels and social media outlets this month, and equally proud to showcase the brilliance of a number of women artists with live performances on our funky, Studio 3 black box stage. Come and enjoy front-row, cafe table seating and raise a toast to the powerful performers at a March concert, staged reading, filmscreening or play. There’s East End Jazz’s All-women All-stars, produced by Iris Ornig, playing a night of swing and blues honoring a century’s-worth of contributions to the genre by women composers and torch-singers; followed a week later by a special appearance of NY-based and internationally celebrated all-women quartet The Isle of Klezbos, bringing their astonishing sound from downtown Joe’s Pub to downtown Wainscott – sponsored in partnership with Sag Harbor’s Temple Adas Israel. From the world of theater, we launch with a staged reading of Laura Darrell’s compelling new play OREGON produced in partnership with Robin Aren and featuring a who’s who ensemble of potent local actresses that includes Teresa DeBerry, Andrea Harum Schiavoni and OLA’s Minerva Scelza. A fully staged production follows suit – complete with costumes, projections and amazing sound design – the one woman show SHIRLEY CHISHOLM: UNBOSSED & UNBOWED written and performed by solo artist and East Hampton resident Ingrid Griffith. A riveting story inspired by the life and times of the icon/trailblazer and first African American woman to run for President of the United States, SHIRLEY CHISHOLM: UNBOSSED & UNBOWED will be presented two times – an evening performance for the general public and a morning matinee geared towards school audiences that is being presented COMPLETELY FREE to students and educators courtesy of LTV. This important play is followed by equally moving, equally important stories as LTV’s new On The Stage film series hosts filmmaker and scholar Annette Danto’s specially curated WOMEN RISING: STORIES OF STRENGTH AND CHANGE – three screenings by women filmmakers from the community, each hosted event to be followed by special Q&A sessions with the artists moderated by Danto. This series stretches over three consecutive Fridays starting at the end of March and running to mid-April; and each screening promises to be a thoughtfully shared, unique and must-see experience.”
