Shelter Island Friends of Music Presents ‘A Soldier’s Tale’

If you’re looking for the East End’s most underground, far-out musical event of the summer, a Sunday afternoon “classical” music performance in a high school auditorium on Shelter Island might not seem like the obvious choice, but Shelter Island Friends of Music is delivering one of the edgier music experiences of the summer on August 3 at 5:30pm.
Stravinsky’s THE SOLDIER’S TALE, as performed by the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, is classical music’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” meets psychedelic light show with top-notch musicians playing inside a set inspired by the Surrealist artists Man Ray and René Magritte from art world darling, Ariel Adkins.
British actor, Bruce Leggett-Flynn, stars in this 60-minute theatrical adaptation where a fiddle-playing soldier goes head-to-head with the devil. If your vibe is a perfect mix of high-brow/ low-brow, you’ll have come to the right place. Come for Stravinsky. Stay for Sunset Beach. With no price for admission (always at the core of SIFM’s offerings) and unreserved general seating, arrive early if you want a seat for one of the summer’s most unexpected and unclassifiable music performances. It’s worth a trip on the ferry!
